DOS Beep & DOS Wait

Last Updated: May 4, 2011

DOS Beep is a batch file that you can call from other batch files which creates a beep sound. There is really only one command necessary to do this, and it is commented in the batch file. Beep bat makes it simple, and offers repeating beeps with adjustable delay between the beeps.

Usage:
beep [n] [t] [q]

n = (Required digit) Number of times to beep (0=infinite)
t = (Required digit) Delay in seconds between beeps
q = (Optional character) Do not show prompt

Example:
beep 3 2 q

Beep 3 times, with 2 seconds between, do no show prompt

DOS Wait is a batch file that you can call from other batch files which creates a delay before proceeding. Again there is really only one command necessary to do this, and it is commended in the batch file.

Usage:
wait [s] [q]

s = (Required digit) Seconds to wait (0 to 9999)
q = (Optional character) Do not show prompt

Example:
wait 5

Wait 5 seconds then proceed.

WTV-DVRMS Converter, Refresh Streaming Media List, Rename Show Files

Last Updated: May 17, 2011

WTV-DVRMS is a DOS batch file which is designed to automatically convert any recording made by Windows 7 Media Center from a WTV file to the older DVR-MS file format. It uses Windows 7's built-in WTVConverter.exe, and just provides a simple method to automate the conversion. This conversion is important for those of us who wish to use media tools which only work on dvr-ms files such as lifextender, a wonderfully simple commercial removal tool.

To use wtv.bat, simply change the RECORDED_DIR, TEMP_DIR, and FAIL_DIR constants to the appropriate directories on your machine. Then start it and leave it running. It will convert as shows are recorded and released by Media Center.

Also included is refresh.bat, which will force an update of Windows Media Player's database for streaming services which tends to get out of whack when you manipulate files directly. If for instance your PS3 does not list all the recordings you have available, run this batch, and it will refresh the list. Note that you can close the DOS (refresh.bat) window once MediaPlayer opens up. If this fails to refresh the streaming list, the problem is likely sharing permissions on the files themselves. Right-click the files and choose to share with homegroup, or specific people (such as everyone).

Now also included is RenameTV.exe which renames Windows Media Center recorded TV files in the same directory as the exe to "[First 8 Chars of ShowName][Year][Month][Day][Hour][Minute].[Extension]". Please review the included RenameTVReadMe.txt before using this application for details.

FFMPEGBatch

Last Updated: May 4, 2011

FFMPEGBatch makes DOS batch files for the FFMPEG video converter which can be found here: http://tripp.arrozcru.org/

There is also an old version (which I prefer) of FFMPEG included in the zip, so you can just extract the zip to a folder and run FFMPEGBatch to get going.

Comes with various profiles, I just recently found out that the "-level 30" switch is required to prevent the annoying iTunes "cannot be played on this iPhone". Not all profiles have this switch or were experiments, etc, but they will give you ideas.

GridPoker

This is a 16-bit DOS game I made in high school. 16-bit DOS applications are not compatible with 64-bit Windows. You can use DOSBox to run this and many other 16-bit DOS applications on a 64-bit OS.

GridPoker is a game where you attempt to get the best poker hands you can across and down in a 5x5 grid. Type A is the official type, and Type B was created at the request of some students. The highest known Type A score was 1000, achieved by myself, although I'm not sure how many people would remember it.

SNAFU is a game I originally played on Intelivision, a game console that existed in the Atari days. You control one of four snakes that keeps growing. Don't hit the walls or other snakes. The objective is to outlast your opponents. The AI is as simple as the original game. They go straight until they hit a wall then randomly turn left or right. This makes them easy prey for traps, but perfect at filling in rectangles.
